Customization Beyond Limits: How Apps & Services Can Tailor Salesforce® to Customer Needs

Looking back on the past few years of rapid digital transformation, it makes sense that IT departments are still reeling. In their “State of the Connected Customer" report Salesforce found that  just 26% of IT departments are able to support all app development requests they receive. Their research also uncovered that the average enterprise organization uses 991 applications in their “Connectivity Benchmark, 2024” study.

Adding to this, Security Magazine says, “68% of IT workers feel overwhelmed by the number of technical resources that are required to access the data they need to work, and 81% believe other employees at their organization feel the same.”

“Many decision-makers readily admit to overlooking crucial data due to accessibility issues. Sixty eight percent of respondents acknowledged disregarding data inputs, with the primary reason being the inability to access information promptly (49%),” said the Security Magazine article.

Those are pretty dramatic stats. It’s clear that organizations need solutions that will help them lighten the load for their IT departments, admins and users.

At Passage Technology, we help customers who are looking for resources and apps that enable them to extend the functionality of Salesforce. Since 2008, our apps and development services have been used by admins and developers for building solutions on the Salesforce platform. Ranging from time-saving admin apps, to productivity tools for sales and service, our solutions meet the stringent security standards required by Salesforce and the industry.

Following are examples of how customers are using our apps and services to extend Salesforce.

Accessing Data from Spreadsheets to Manage Multiple Projects in Salesforce

Our first example involves a client who needed the data moved over from a spreadsheet to Milestones PM+  and spread out over several projects, so that they could access it. Leveraging our knowledge of the Salesforce platform, we were able to get the data set imported to Salesforce. Next, we used a flow to orchestrate the imported data to the correct projects, automatically filling in specified fields. Extending Rollup Functionality for Text Rollups & Scheduling Rollups

Glen Huckins, who is the Aftermarket/CRM Manager at Thompson Pump, said they chose Rollup Helper from Passage Technology because they needed a way to do text rollups. Although you can do count, sum, min, and max rollups and create filters to limit which rollups fire with a native rollup in Salesforce, you can't include cross-object formula fields in rollup summary filters. With Rollup Helper, you can create more than 25 types of rollups, including Advanced Currency Management, unique count, checkbox, and text.

“The ability to schedule rollups has enabled us to run our morning GEMBA reports without manually running specific rollups that need to run without a field change triggering them,” said Glen. (Full story: Thompson Pump Gets Around Rollup Limitations & Simplifies Reporting with Rollup Helper).

Searching for a Way to Relate Custom Objects to an Account

Rare Karma was looking for a way to relate two Custom Objects that are related to an Account, but they couldn't find a way to do it without code. “I realized that I needed a complex lookup field, and when the standard Salesforce custom fields weren't of help, I decided Lookup Helper  would be worth a shot. The matching needed to be done based on the Record Type, Account, as well as Month/Year,” said Alicia.

They had tried using Flows, Lookup Fields, and Master-Detail Relationships, but none of these solutions fit their needs. Alicia adds, “It was difficult because of the multiple variables. It seemed we might have to do things manually or return to code.”

“After a demo, Passage Technology’s Operations Manager Jacob Blair gave me a perfect solution to the issue we were facing. He helped me create a matching__c field on both Objects that was a formula field: “Account : Month/Year : RecordType,” explained Alicia.

“From here, we could use Lookup Helper to create the relationship, and then Rollup Helper to place a sum of the appropriate values on our Custom Object. Now we can focus on other things while this just does the job in the background!” said Alicia. (Full story: Rollup Helper & Lookup Helper Empower Rare Karma to Achieve Goals Without Code).
